scholarship ...

The Board of Trustees inaugurated the R.K. Dewhurst Scholarship in 1989, to commemorate the retirement of Mr Dewhurst after 21 years as Principal of Dargaville High School. The scholarship is available to a pupil of either sex who is entering the hostel for the first time that year. It is valued at one term's fees for each scholar. This is paid by way of credit of one quarter of each term's fees for the year of tenure. To be considered for the scholarship students should send in a covering letter in their own handwriting with their CV, which should include academic, sporting and/or cultural achievements, certificates and their most recent school report. Enquiries can be made at the School office (09) 439 7229.

bursaries ...

Most pupils are eligible for bursary assistance if they need to live away from home to attend school. They must, however, live 4.8 km's from the nearest state school or bus service.

When Are They Paid?
Successful applicants usually receive bursary confirmation from the Ministry of Education early in the year. Payments are made on a term basis - the first term's installment being paid in the second term. At the end of each term the school must notify the Ministry of the number of days absent for each bursary pupil, along with reasons for absence. The Ministry of Education then adjusts the amount of payment accordingly. No adjustment is made for a short absence for sickness or family reasons. A medical certificate is required for an illness of 3 days or more.

How do you make an application for a Bursary?
The School's Guidance Counsellor (Wendy Banton) will bring application forms on her initial enrolling visit to a school if you are in the Dargaville High School catchment area. The visit usually takes place in early October. For those people living outside the area, forms can be obtained from the school or you can use this link to download an application form. The Ministry of Education decides whether or not a boarding bursary is payable, NOT the school.
