greetings from the hostel managers ...
We welcome this opportunity to introduce you to our co-educational hostel. We know that selecting a place of residence for your children during their intermediate and secondary education can be difficult and confusing. This is probably their first ever move away from home. We believe our hostel provides the very best in management and staff with an excellent range of educational and recreational facilities in a modern environment. We regard positive hostel-parent/caregiver relations as vital to the efficiency of managing a happy operational hostel. The hostel was first established in 1972 and offers a wonderful atmosphere for boarders to meet new people and make new friends. We look forward to welcoming your child into our hostel family. Eddie & Simone Matthews, the Hostel Managers
Five day boarding is available and weekend home-stays can be arranged for overseas students to experience the New Zealand lifestyle and gain confidence in the English language. Bursaries are available to certain overseas students. Enquiries should be addressed to David Bargh (Principal) or Eddie and Simone Matthews. Our School hostel draws students from overseas and throughout New Zealand. We recognise the need to create a 'home away from home' and offer a spacious, pleasant environment for study and recreation with an easy walk to the school.
Facilities
The facilities available to boarders are excellent. The hostel offers clean, modern, comfortable living. Students are housed in single bedrooms. All living areas are carpeted, warm and tidy.
Meals
Our students put a lot of energy into their study and recreational time. They need hearty and nourishing meals to sustain them. An excellent variety of meals are provided Monday afternoon through to Friday lunch. Students must provide their own lunch on Monday. Our menu offers generous quantities and high nutritional value, a must for growing teenagers!
Recreation
The hostel offers staff and students a varied range of recreational activities. During the year we interact in leisure and sport activities allowing a good rapport to develop. We have regular access to the school gymnasium, sports equipment, weight training facilities, tennis courts, swimming pool and sports fields.
Dargaville provides an ideal environment for outdoor activities, including fishing, hunting, tramping, water sports or just walking. We have access to local clubs - target shooting, martial arts, Air Training Corps, local gym and water skiing. Dargaville High offers a wide range of sporting, cultural and music activities for students. It also offers the school library including access to computers and other school facilities by arrangement.
Transport
Dargaville is 180 km's north of Auckland, 50 km's west of Whangarei and 80 km's south of Opononi. Five day students arrive at the hostel from 8.00 am on Monday and are required to leave by 3.30 pm on Friday. Students with a drivers licence may use their own vehicle (prior written permission from parents and hostel manager required). Cars must have insurance, a Warrant of Fitness and be registered. Students may not transport passengers at any time.
Fees
Fees for 2010 are $4,800 GST inclusive per annum / $1,200 GST inclusive per term (discount given for prompt payment). Hostel fees are due on the first day of each term. Parents/Guardians whose children have bursaries, may assign these bursaries to the school in part payment of fees. Our fees are among the lowest in New Zealand. Prompt payment helps us to maintain this. The continuing rise in costs affects the hostel in the same way as it does your family budget. For this reason the fees are reviewed from time to time by the Hostel Committee and Board of Trustees.
