Dargaville High School Trades Academy New Zealand

Trades Academy

Schools in Tai Tokerau have come together to provide a new government initiative: Trades in Schools.

The Tai Tokerau Trades Academy provides a place for students wanting to learn a trade to focus on this while still at High School, getting the jump on their competitors by completing theory and practical that count toward a National Trade Certificate and their NCEA accreditation. Students must be involved in a minimum of 15 hours of trades specific learning which can be a combination of practical and theory based teaching.

The Trades Academy differs from school subject courses as they are almost an entire programe in themselves. Students will spend most school periods involved in their academy work, be it practical or theory orientated.

Dargaville High School offers Housebuilding through the BCITO theory package and ventures out into the community to give the students access to practical experience. This course also offers Health and Safety units through Northtec, First Aid training and the ramset course.

Tim is a man who once was in Oz
He's back in his homeland - we know him because
He was looking for work at the start of the year
He landed in Dargy of that we are clear.

The high school was looking for a man who could do
A few things with boys, such as building a loo.
A man who could show some boys how to erect
A shed and some stairs, a wall and a deck,
A mezzanine floor and thats just the start
They even created a studio for art.

New words were learnt like ridge and set back
Spandrel and rebar and knee wall and cap
Bracing and sinkers and door sweep and flutes
Term slump and strike plate and joist and volute

Flashing and newel post and bull float as well
Flushbolt and back fill and also reveal
Light density fibreboard, raised panel door
Newel post, compaction and solid wood floor.

Theres Jordan and Hayden and Barrie and Syd
Its really amazing just what they all did
And dont forget Regan and Craig, Ben and Chris
What they've achieved is just fabulous!

Good luck to you all, just dont forget
Tim's words of advice you'll never regret
Mitre the outside, scribe on the in
Never forget this and then you will win!
